The Great Pancake Escape
Published in Library Binding by Walker & Co Library (April, 2002)
Authors: Paul Many and Scott Goto
Average review score:

LA Times' "Best Children's Book"
Just a note to let readers know that the Los Angeles Times has named this wonderful book as one (of only nine) of the "Best Children's Books of 2002."

Pancake-mania.....
"Our dad is a magician,/who can make a bird go poof,/but the day he cooked us pancakes,/he made an awful goof..." Poor Dad was working from the wrong book. He'd picked up his book of magic tricks instead of the cookbook and "Ka-Blam", everything went crazy. The bowl spun round and round, the batter jumped into the pan all by itself, and the pancakes leaped off the griddle and rolled out the door. "Where did they go?" cried little Ned./Louise had teary eyes./"Now don't be sad," I told them both./"Well catch those sneaky guys!" But the task turns out to be a lot harder than they thought, until the kids begin to notice that everything round...bus, car, even rollerskate wheels, manhole covers, traffic lights, frisbees... had turned to pancakes. And when those errant hotcakes take flight the kids rush back home and finally solve the problem in an ingeniously unique way..... Paul Many's manic, rhyming text is full of energy, rhythm, and motion, and complemented by Scott Goto's engaging, bold, busy, and colorful artwork. Each two page spread is jam-packed with clever, eye-catching details, that pulls the reader into the story and right along on the chase to save breakfast. Perfect for youngsters 4-8, The Great Pancake Escape is a rip-roarin', hilarious, crowd pleaser that begs to be read aloud, and a soon-to-be favorite at your house.

A great caper!
It should have been another dull yawning in the dawning, slapping ingredients together for a hurried breakkie. Instead, Dad reads from the wrong recipe book, & all of a sudden Ka-BLAM! - batter is sizzling & pancakes are wriggling - off the kids' plates, through the house, out the door!

If the kids want their breakfast they're going to have to chase off after it - through town where the stampeding pancakes have glomped onto taxi wheels, skipped over ponds & tumbled mailmen!

THE GREAT PANCAKE ESCAPE is written in rhyming verse, & is a rollicking read with all the ingredients for a tasty feast of words.

Fun reading & laughing for the whole family & Scott Goto's lively illustrations are the maple syrup!

GroupWise 5.5 Administrator's Guide
Published in Paperback by Sybex, Inc. (11 December, 1998)
Authors: Danita Zanre, Richard Beels, Scott Kunau, and Danita Venre
Average review score:

This was an invaluable tool for setting up our system.
Very happy with the layout and content. Also was very helpful in setting up GWIA.

A must-have book for any GroupWise administrator
This is a thorough, well-written book. The appendices are great. The "gotchas" are well documented. I used this book for an upgrade I did last weekend. The upgrade went smoothly and there were no surprises.

The BEST GroupWise 5.5 Administrator book!
Since GroupWise 5.5 was released, I have looked for an updated GW Admin book and this was the first one out. Actually, that's a good thing because Zanre, Beels & Kunau did a superb job with their first book (the 5.2 version). My hopes were set high as I began reading this new edition. I must say that I am completely satisfied with the content of this book. The subject matter is well-described and the author's have a good sense of what it takes to run a real-live system. No ivory tower descriptions here. The authors definitely know what they are talking about!

The Guide to Investing in Common Stocks
Published in Paperback by Globe Pequot Pr (02 April, 1995)
Author: David Logan Scott
Average review score:

So you want to invest in Common Stocks.
If you want to try your luck in investing in Common Stock, this book will provide the knowledge you need. It will help you avoid the pitfalls commonly made, even those made by so called experts. Selecting a profitable stock is tricky at best. This book will guide you through the many obstacles to ensure you make a sound choice. It will also explain the role of the broker, how stock is evaluated and the risks associated with ownership. This book is worth the read and will give you the understanding you need to procede with your investments.

Objective and complete.
What is a stock? What is a stock market? What do brokers do and how do they do it? Market makers, specialists, pit bosses - wass'up wid dat? Mr. Scott explains it all without the usual BS of Wade Cook-ish advanced strategies for people who don't have a fundamental understanding of the market. Mr. Scott tells you how the market operates - not how to play it. It's like the owners manual for a car. He tells you what makes the car work but leaves it up to you as to how fast you want to drive. I bought this book a year or so before I started investing over three years ago. It was a favorite of mine along with Mr. Scott's other books on personal finance, mutual funds, and the stock market in general. I am an aggressive growth investor spending over 20 hours a week on the market. A value investor who buys and forgets about a stock for 20 years will get the same benefit as I did from this book. Knowing how the market and investment vehicles work takes a lot of the old "Did I do the right thing with my money" worries away. This book is a very big step in the direction any investor needs to go before turning over so much as one penny to a world of fantastic dreams and incredible pitfalls. The market is way more fun for those of us who understand it.

An Excellent Book for Beginners
As a novice investor I found this book to be just what I was looking for. It explains stocks in a way even I can understand. I recommend this for people who are just getting started with the stock market.

"It is excellent" - Bill Knudsen, U.S. Space Foundation

An excellent resource
"We [The Young Astronaut Council] believe it to be an excellent resource for all those interested in a career in aerospace. The book presents its information in a clear, logical, step-by-step manner that will be especially helpful to those who think they may be interested in a career in space, but are unfamiliar with the wide rage of posssibilities and opportunities.

We liked the "where we have been, where we are going, and how it is organized" approach. The book offered excellent resournces in terms of educational institutions, businesses, government, and private sector information. the book provides those interested in a career in space with a means of self-examination and tips on landing a job"

"This publication is a valuable tool for young people interested in learning what space-related academic programs, career paths, and professional development opporutnities are available to them", Kara Wilson, Aerospace States Association, Deputy Director

The Heart & Soul of Change: What Works in Therapy
Published in Hardcover by American Psychological Association (APA) (April, 1999)
Authors: Mark A. Hubble, Barry L. Duncan, and Scott D. Miller
Average review score:

Scientific , useful, and readable
Based on the strong literature review, professionals in the human services field may well see an improvement in their clinical outcomes if they follow the suggestions in this book.

Not one that will you'll skip over and leave "un-read."
I found this text to be of great help. The contributing chapters and the topics covered are fantastic. The authors take therapy constructs that have always been detailed in writing styles far too thick and complex and now describes them in descriptions much easier to understand, all the better for the transfer from theory to practice. While certainly pointed at the field of therapy, this book speaks to many of the "helping" disciplines---more can be "therapeutic" by aligning with these "common factors." The authors give great review to the ingredients to effective interventions and behavior change. When I finished this book, I was left with the impression that although everyone may not be in the "therapy business" this book shows how many who "help" can now be far more involved in the positive behavior change business.

I read this with relish. A genuine "Thanks" to all those who contributed to this book. I can't say enough about it.

Challenge your thinking about doing therapy
This book challenged what I was taught to do when doing therapy. The book inspired me--made me think about new ways to view "stuck" cases. The case examples were powerful and the writing was excellent. A bit of interspersed humor made the reading interesting. I highly reccommend this book to anyone in the field of therapy. In fact, I suggest reading this book before going in to the field so that one can avoid becoming pigeon-holed into any certain formal, traditional model of therapy.

Heat Wave
Published in Library Binding by Walker & Co Library (March, 1998)
Authors: Helen Ketteman and Scott Goto
Average review score:

Great introduction "set" for a science class.
Believe it or not, I use this book as a read-aloud for my 8th grade (13 year olds!) science class. I read it to them before beginning a unit on weather. Even this age finds it humorous. Add this to your collection!

The cream of the crop
Again terrific illustrations in a children's book. The colors are dynamic and the silliness will grab your attention on every page. The author takes the impossible (only skips a few steps in each process)to make things happen! The ending is a surprise and could only come from Kansas!

Fun and amusing
My four-year-old has requested this for one of his bedtime stories for over one week running. The story itself is a humourous tall tale about a farm in Kansas. The illustrations are hilarious, and the expressions on the characters (including the farm animals) are expressive and funny. A great children's book, but wacky enough to make adults laugh, too.

Hiking Washington's Geology

Find a spot in your daypack for this book!
Hiking Washington's Geology is a well-written, informative book that describes the geologic evolution of a wide and varied landscape. I especially appreciate the detailed directions on how to get to the trailheads and equally detailed descriptions of things to look for while hiking. This book is a must-have for anyone interested in the geologic natural history of Washington....

An Outstanding book for Hikers in Washington
This is an excellent read! The book highlighted some outstanding hikes and I learned lots about the interesting geology of the PNW. This book is a must for any hiker in Washington!!

Great Hiking Book
This is a great book outlining interesting geology in Washington State, and offers suggestions of which hikes should be done.

A History of Christianity
Published in Unknown Binding by ()
Author: Kenneth Scott Latourette
Average review score:

Quick Review
This work is an important 20th century contribution. An outstanding two-volume series!

Of all the histories of Christianity, this one is very clear and engaging to read. I love his writing style. It is really, really worth every penny!

Superb -- but readable -- scholarship
Latourette does a masterful job of presenting a comprehensive history of the Christian religion in a readable form. This is an overview of the subject from the time of Christ to just before the Reformation (Vol. 2 picks up after 1500). Latourette doesn't just focus on the Western world or on institutional religion, but on Christianity in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, some of the personalities behind the history, and on popular movements within Christianity (some of which - such as monasticism - became institutions in their own right). This is an excellent scholarly overview on an enormous topic that makes it interesting for the average reader.

Classic Treatment of Christian History
This work is generally known as a modern classic of Church History. If you are looking for a basic, comprehensive survey of Christian Church history, this is it. If you want something easier and faster than LaTourette, I would recommend Bruce Shelley's "Church History in Plain Language". However, LaTourette is superior. If you want something more comprehensive than LaTourette, I would recommend the 5 volume set by Jarslov Pelikan.

How to Use Html 3.2

Authors: Scott Arpajian and Robert Mullen
Average review score:

Best intro to HTML around
Can't seem to find it in stores anymore. Get it here. Great intro to give to someone just getting started. Lots of pictures, screen shots, etc.

A beginners dream come true
This book is great for people just starting out in HTML. It takes you step-by-step through the basics of creating a great web page. The book provides in depth description along with colorful examples. It also provides extra pointers, along with links to helpful web sites. This book took me from knowing nothing about HTML to becoming a web master of my own site.

A great beginner's book.
This book went step by step from knowing nothing about writing a web page to making a quite complete up-to-date one. And all from scratch, needing only a text editor such as notepad. Links to graphics, various plug-ins, and other helpful downloads are provided. Lots of clear, very helpful pictures are used. I could have had my first page up the next day if I had had a server available

How to Use Html3 (How It Works Series)
Published in Paperback by Ziff Davis Pr (March, 1996)
Authors: Scott Arpajian and Ziff-Davis Press
Average review score:

Beginner's best choice
Resently I got an assignment to build a web page but I had absolutely no experience. Fortunately, I had picked this book up intending some day to read it. Using HTML3 as my only source of reference, I was able to build a multi-paged web site with over 400 links world-wide. If it hadn't been for this book, I'd still be scratching my head and wondering how to start.

Excellent beginner's book
This was the fourth book on HTML I've purchased and the only one that was clear and made sense. The explanations are great and pictures helpful. I followed it and created my web page in a short time

Clear, concise, and easy for a "newbie" to HTML.
As a beginner, learning HTML was a daunting prospect. Scott Arpajian's book, HTML3 was a real FIND for me. Since reading this book (more than once) I have constructed a personal homepage, and successfully completed several college computer courses requiring HTML work. THANKS.
